Cats Could Live to 30: Japanese Startup Seeks Approval for Breakthrough Kidney Treatment

Cats of Tokyo – In a move that could fundamentally change the lifespan of domestic cats, the Tokyo-based startup Institute for AIM Medicine (IAM) formally filed for manufacturing and marketing approval of its flagship drug, FeliAIM, on April 24, 2026.

The filing with Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries represents the final regulatory step before the drug can be made available to the public. If approved, it would be the world’s first treatment to address the underlying biological cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in felines.

The Science: Why “30 Years” is Possible

The research, led by Dr. Toru Miyazaki, identifies a feline-specific biological glitch. In humans and dogs, a protein called AIM (Apoptosis Inhibitor of Macrophage) detaches from the bloodstream to “clear out” dead cells and debris in the kidneys. In cats, AIM is genetically bound too tightly to another molecule, preventing it from ever “cleaning” the organ.

By injecting a recombinant version of this protein, the treatment “unlocks” the cat’s natural ability to clear renal debris. Dr. Miyazaki believes that with early intervention and regular maintenance, a cat’s natural lifespan could potentially be doubled, reaching up to 30 years.

Key Clinical Results (2026 Update)

Recent clinical data published in The Veterinary Journal (February 2026) provided the evidence necessary for the filing. The study followed cats with advanced (Stage 3 and 4) CKD:

  • Survival Rates: Cats treated with the AIM drug showed a 360-day survival rate of 80–83%.
  • The Control Group: Untreated cats with similar disease progression had a survival rate of only 20% over the same period.
  • Functionality: The drug did not just extend life; it stabilized kidney biomarkers and improved the cats’ appetite and activity levels.

Trustworthy Resources & Further Reading

For those following the development closely, these are the primary sources for verified information:

  • Official Research Body: The Institute for AIM Medicine (IAM) – Led by Dr. Toru Miyazaki, this site provides updates on both feline and human applications of the AIM protein.
  • Scientific Data: The Veterinary Journal (PubMed/Elsevier) – “A clinical impact of apoptosis inhibitor of macrophage on feline chronic kidney disease” (Published 2026).
  • General Feline Health: Cornell Feline Health Center – A leading authority on why CKD is the #1 cause of death in senior cats.
  • Current Standard of Care: VCA Animal Hospitals – Information on how to manage CKD with diet and hydration while waiting for new treatments.

Important Note: While FeliAIM is a breakthrough, it is currently in the regulatory review phase. It is not yet available for purchase at veterinary clinics. Cat parents are advised to continue standard CKD management, such as renal diets and hydration therapy, as recommended by their veterinarians.
