5 Essential Tips For First-Time Kitten Owners

First-time kitten owners can expect an element of surprise when they bring a new kitten home, no doubt. Naturally, you want your furry friend to adapt to their new environment and have a happy experience in their new forever home. Fortunately, Cat Talk sat down with Cape Town veterinarian, Dr Elisabeth Broussard, to discuss what to expect when bringing home a new kitten and essential kitten care tips to help any household.

Here are 5 essential tips for new kitten owners:

1. Expect the unexpected

Essentially, kittens are known to be curious, and playful. They can keep us on our toes at all times. For instance, “new kittens have an amazing amount of energy, and love to climb things and run around,” states Broussard. Safeguard your home to keep your precious kitten safe from hazards, even when you can’t be there. Take food for instance. Many human foods are toxic for pets, and some foods are simply a no-no because they can cause blockages, diarrhea, or other issues.

Similarly, flowers can be very toxic to cats, so talk to your veterinarian about what flowers and plants to avoid.

2. Stock up on everyday items

No kitten home is complete without its own bed, litter box and cat toiletries, food, and water bowls. Go for luxury or keep things simple. Either way, make sure your kitten starter pack includes these cat essentials.

3. Create an exclusive safety zone (throne) for the new King or Queen

Broussard explains the importance of having a separate space for your furry friend.

“Cat trees and kitty condos can give cats a place to go and climb to escape dogs and children in the house. Also, cats like cubbies and should have a safe space to hide.”

Take things slow when you introduce the new member of the family to other pets and be mindful and supervise when children are around.

4. Select the food you feed your kitten carefully

Speak to your vet for advice on the best food to support your kitten’s nutritional needs and overall health requirements. Select kitten food that provides a good balance of proteins, vitamins and minerals to help little cats grow up strong and healthy.

5. Schedule a Vet Visit

The sooner you take your new kitten to a veterinarian, the better. It’s important that the doctor check for parasites, test for diseases like FIV and FelV, examine the possibility of hereditary or other medical conditions, and provide appropriate vaccines.
