Are you yearning for a fresh-from-the-oven buttery scone that has been doused with raspberry jam? Perhaps a dollop of lightly whipped cream is a necessity for you? No matter how you prefer to scoff down your scones, one thing is for sure – nothing beats a warm scone! Unless, of course, it is a scone baked in the shape that resembles your cat’s head! You read that correctly, we are making scones in the shape of a cat’s head! Go cat-crazy by serving these buttery delights with a cat-shaped teabag for the ultimate afternoon high tea.

From Britain with Love!

Scones have long been a staple for afternoon tea, not just in its native Great Britain but all around the world. Back in the day; somewhere in rural England, the first scones were baked in a cast iron pan that was hung over the kitchen fire. Scones recipes have evolved over time and are often enriched with eggs or buttermilk to create a rich and flakey teatime treat. Traditionally, scones are shaped by cutting the balled dough into quarters. We bet no old-timey scone-baker from way back then would have ever imagined that cat-shaped scones would be a thing in the faraway future. Thanks to the resident chef at KAT KULT, it is!

If you love to indulge in warm buttery cat-shaped treats, you’ve probably sampled a fair amount of scones over the years. Good ones, average ones and the ones that require a huge glass of milk to get down. This fool-proof recipe is by far the easiest I have come across and guarantees perfectly soft and buttery scones every time. In fact, this recipe is so versatile, that you could easily use it as a base to make some cheesy savoury scones. Simply leave out the sugar and add a cup of grated cheese to the mix between steps three and four.

Ingredients

  • 300 g All-purpose flour
  • 20 g Baking powder
  • 5 g Salt
  • 40 g Brown Sugar
  • 50 g Butter, cubed
  • 140 ml Milk
  • 1 Egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 240°C.
  2. Sift all of the dry ingredients together and use your fingertips to rub the cubed butter into the dry ingredients.
  3. Add the milk and egg, and use a wooden spoon to mix all the ingredients together until a ball forms and the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently press it down until it is around 2cm thick. Press out as many scones as you can using your cat-shaped cookie cutter, collect the bits together and reshape it to press out more cats.
  5. Transfer the shaped scones to your prepared baking tray and bake them for 10 minutes.
  6. Switch off the oven, flip the scones over and put them back in the oven for an additional five minutes. Allow the scones to cool down slightly before covering them with your favourite scone toppings, we love salted butter and raspberry jam!
