In what can only be termed a Christmas miracle, the Fallen Angels Animal Shelter in Melkbosstrand outside Cape Town has discovered a ray of hope during its most challenging times.
After receiving a 90-day eviction notice due to safety regulations surrounding the Koeberg nuclear power plant along the West Coast, the shelter was confronted with the urgent challenge of relocating 350 animals before the holidays. However, thanks to the overwhelming generosity of animal lovers from across the globe, a new sanctuary for these animals is now within reach. Donations have flowed in, allowing the shelter to acquire land and initiate the installation of essential perimeter fencing.
Co-Founder Gayl Basson shared with IOL that citizens of Cape Town have embraced their community spirit by adopting over 20 animals.
“For months, we were overwhelmed with worry,” Basson said.
“But seeing how much people care and how they’ve rallied behind us – it feels like a Christmas blessing. A huge weight has been lifted off our shoulders. We now have the foundation of a safe haven for our animals.”
Basson said she also realised there’s still a lot of work ahead.
“The shelter requires additional funds to construct kennels, improve infrastructure, and successfully complete the relocation process. However, we remain optimistic about overcoming these challenges, thanks to the generosity of our dedicated supporters”.
In the meantime Fallen Angels is still waiting on the City of Cape Town’s response to an appeal they lodged, affording them more time to raise funds and also to relocate the animals comfortably.
