How To Safely Catch Feral Kittens

During kitten season, it’s common to come across feral kittens, and while they are super cute, it’s important to handle them carefully to avoid stressing them out or getting hurt.

Capetonians Against Animal Abuse, a rescue organization in Cape Town, shared these tips on Facebook on how to safely catch a feral kitten:

Don’t Cuddle or Hold Feral Kittens

Feral kittens are scared and instinctively want to flee. Picking them up for cuddles will only cause them to panic, increasing the risk of injury to themselves or to you.

Use the Scruff Method

If you need to pick up the kitten, use the scruff method: gently grasp the skin at the back of their neck (where the mother cat would carry them). This is a safe and non-threatening way to control them without causing harm.

Place Feral Kittens in a Safe, Secure Box

Once you’ve gently scruffed the kitten, carefully place them into a small, secure box or carrier. Make sure the box is well-ventilated, but also secure enough that they can’t escape or injure themselves trying to get out.

Minimize Stress

Keep the kitten in a quiet, calm environment to reduce stress. Avoid handling them further unless necessary (e.g., for feeding, health check, or transport to a rescue).

Get Professional Help

If you’re unsure how to care for the kitten, contact a local animal rescue or shelter. Feral kittens often need specialized care and socialization to become adoptable, so getting help is crucial for their well being.

Remember, your safety and the kitten’s safety are both top priorities. The goal is to remove them from immediate danger and get them to a safe place where they can get the proper care.
